Cleaning and disinfection is not only part of an Avian Influenza prevention strategy, it should prevent any disease. Moreover, a good sanitation programme will improve production results, so it is economically very important. It should be perceived as an investment, rather than as a cost.

There is room for hygiene measures at several ‘critical control’ points. In addition, frequent egg collection will help reduce contamination (and ‘spontaneous incubation’ in hot climates).

Luc Ledoux, our Business Unit Manager, wrote an article about the effective use of disinfectants in disease prevention and control in hatcheries. The first part of the article was published in International Hatchery Practice Volume 31 Number 2 and the second part in Volume 31 Number 3. In this article we have followed the embryo from the breeder farm through the hatchery, to the farm.
